It just wasn’t meant to be was it? The Phoenix Suns(7-12) who have lost their last 4 games fell the to Memphis Grizzlies(13-3) in overtime on Tuesday night at the FedexForum in Memphis 98-108.
The Suns had control of the game for the better part of the 4 quarters however it was Rudy Gay who had only scored 14 points all game, hit the game tying floater with 16 seconds left in regulation to ultimately send the game into overtime. Once overtime began the Memphis Grizzlies rode on the back of their all-star forward Zach Randolph who had a career high 38 points as a Memphis Grizzlie. Randolph made 3 straight buckets in overtime to just about close the game for Memphis.
Zach Randolph led Memphis with 38 points, 22 rebounds and 3 blocks, his partner in crime Marc Gasol added 14 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists. Goran Dragic was the man for the Suns on Tuesday night, Dragic scored 19 points on 8 of 15 shooting and dished out 7 dimes; Luis Scola added 16 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 steals off the bench.
Memphis began the game flat and the Suns jumped on them early, the Grizzlies led briefly 14-12 then the Suns would go on an 18-4 run and held a 30-18 lead with 9:34 left in the 2nd quarter. The Suns led by as much as 16 in the 2nd quarter but Memphis would storm back and the Suns led Memphis 52-45 at halftime.
The Suns would possess the lead for just about remainder of the game up until the 1:31 mark in the 4th quarter when Randolph tied the game at 91-91 with a lay-up. Dragic would then lose the ball to Memphis point guard Mike Conley the following possession which led to a clear path foul committed by Luis Scola, Conley would go on to make 1 out of 2 free throws and Memphis now had the lead 92-91.
Conley would then miss a 3-point attempt with 52.8 left in regulation and Scola would come down the other end and score off of a turn around bank shot with 37 seconds left which gave Phoenix a 93-92 lead.
Memphis then committed a turnover the following possession and they would foul Goran Dragic who missed 1 of 2 free throws and the Suns led 94-92 with 26 seconds left in the ball game. After a Memphis timeout, Rudy Gay would save the day for Memphis tying the game up at 94-94 with 16 seconds left to go, however the Suns couldn’t score on the final possession of the game to win it.
Once the game had gone into overtime, it was already over. Memphis outscored Phoenix 14-4 in the overtime period. Memphis made 5 of 8 attempts in overtime while the Suns shot 0 for 4 with 2 turnovers.
This is the 3rd game on the Suns 6 game road trip that boiled down to the last few seconds of the ball game, the Suns lost a tight one in Philadelphia, then lost a tight one in Toronto, and now lose one in overtime heading back to Phoenix.
The Suns now fall to 2-9 on the road and went 1-5 on this 6 game trip. The Suns will now prepare to themselves to face the Dallas Mavericks Thursday night back home in a game which if fans “Don’t have fun at the game” They will be given a full refund. Odd campaign but we’ve seen worse.
