It looks like the 2013 NBA draft just can’t catch a break. The top prospect in the draft Nerlens Noels tore his ACL in February. Marcus Smart a top 3 prospect backs out of the draft and decides to return to Oklahoma State, and now Anthony Bennett according to his agent Jeff Schwartz will undergo rotator cuff surgery on his left shoulder tomorrow.
According to Chad Ford, Bennett played with the injury throughout most of the season however the surgery will cause Bennett to miss not only the draft combine which is scheduled for May 16th and 17th, but also the summer league. Ford also said that Bennett could have held off the surgery until after he was drafted but that would have resulted in him missing training camp and that was something that Bennett was trying to avoid.
“You always would prefer a guy is healthy, works out for you and can play in summer league,” one GM said. “However, I don’t think in this case that it will really matter. We got a good feel for his game. He’s one of the most NBA-ready prospects in the draft. I wouldn’t blink taking him in the Top 5 as long as the surgery is successful.”
Personally I loved Anthony Bennett, in fact he, Ben McLemore, and Nerlens Noel had a three way tie on my list as top prospects for the Phoenix Suns.
Anthony Bennett was the fourth ranked prospect on ESPN Chad Ford’s big board and is projected to be a top-ten pick in the upcoming draft.
