Who’s likely there

My two favorite prospects who will likely be there for the Suns at number five are shooting guards Victor Oladipo and C.J McCollum. Those are two guys that will “Very” Likely be there, and between those two guys the Suns would choose between a player with elite defensive abilities (Oladipo) and a scoring machine (McCollum). Ironically enough, both guys are undersized (Both guys are roughly 6’3) but makes up for it in different ways. Oladipo compensates for his lack of size with his superb athletic abilities and length while McCollum does so by having point guard abilities. McCollum reminds me a lot of Damian Lillard, dynamic scorer who played at a small college.

If McCollum makes the transition from shooting guard to point guard like Russell Westbrook did when he came out of UCLA, McCollum has the potential to be a star in the NBA, but that’s a huge if. The Suns already have Goran Dragic and Kendall Marshall at point guard so if the Suns opt to draft McCollum, he’ll likely have to play alongside those two guys as a shooting guard which would make him a liability at the defensive end. McCollum’s lateral quickness is average at best, add that with his lack of size, the James Harden and Dwayne Wades of the NBA will have a field day matching up against him. One underrated factor that works in McCollum’s favor is the fact that he spent four years in college and four year college players tends to be far more NBA ready than the one and done college players.

Oladipo’s measurement at the combine didn’t do him any favors as he measured in at just 6’3 1/4 without shoes. One of the biggest selling points for Oladipo earlier this year was that he’d be able to guard three or maybe even four positions at the next level. Given his height he’ll have no problem defending guards and the smaller threes in the NBA but he won’t be able to guard the bigger forwards like a Kevin Durant. However Oladipo will still provide impact defense and rebounding at the shooting guard position right away. His athleticism already at an elite level, his offensive game will come along in the NBA; just not right away.
