Jeff Withey (center)

Mar 29, 2013; Arlington, TX, USA; Kansas Jayhawks center Jeff Withey (5) blocks the shot of Michigan Wolverines forward Jon Horford (15) in the first half during the semifinals of the South regional of the 2013 NCAA Tournament at Cowboys Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports

Height: 7’0”

Weight: 222 lbs

Wingspan: 7’2”

Max Vertical Leap: 29”

NBA Comparison:

Omar Asik. Both players are centers with big and tall, but not heavy frames. Asik weighs more, but Withey is probably more agile. They can finish around the rim and are great at defense as paint protectors. They can play a bit of offense, but are more that roll man on the pick and roll instead of a post-up guy, who needs the ball on the block to score. On defense they can anchor the defense and seem to generally get the defensive stop without fouling.

Strengths:

  • Good finisher around the rim (non-post-up)
  • Huge difference maker on defense with excellence defensive instincts
  • Low foul-rate, which is important for a big man
  • Volleyball background helps him block shots, keeping the ball inbounds

Weaknesses:

  • Needs to gain strength, especially in his lower body to bang with other bigs down low
  • Offensive rebounding
  • Get consistent mid-range jumper
  • Possibly no killer instinct, needs to work on consistent intensity during the game

How he fits with the Suns:

Withey could be a catch with the last pick in the first round. With Phoenix in rebuilding mode they need to quickly force a youth movement which means getting younger at key positions. Centers, Marcin Gortat and Jermaine O’Neal are some of the oldest players on the roster and if the Suns can’t get Rudy Gobert or someone similar with the draft pick received in a Gortat trade then they could take Withey with the 30th pick. He would be great on defense and with other draft picks and Dragic, the offense should be covered.
