Phoenix’s summer league squad moved to 4-0 with a 92-84 victory over Portland in Vegas as the Suns earned a berth in the Quarterfinals.
The Suns went on 24-0 run in the first half when NBA TV cut their feed to a press conference of Commissioner David Stern about various (non-breaking) news items, headlined by the name change of the Bobcats back to the Hornets.
The game was in hand in the second half for the most part except for a couple times when Portland brought the lead to single digits. Unfortunately, for anyone affiliated with the Suns, one of those times was in the final minutes, and the game had to be iced by superb free throw shooting.
The scoring was balanced with six players for Phoenix scoring in double figures.
The team was again led by their veterans of P.J. Tucker and the Morris twins (or Morrii, as some have called them).
Diante Garrett showed his value with his game-high plus/minus of +20. He had 14 points and three assists in just over 17 minutes off the bench.
The two players I am predicting will have a chance to make the Suns roster both played well Thursday. Dionte Christmas, who I believe has a slight edge, scored 15 points off the bench in about 20 minutes. Chris Babb, who should make a team in the near future, had 11 points in just less than 16 minutes. Babb seems like more of a “D & 3” bench player, while Christmas seems like more of a complete player and has a higher ceiling.
- P.J. Tucker is again a man playing against boys out there in Vegas
- The Morrii are going to turn some heads in the national media this upcoming season
- Suns fans, writers, and management are going to LOVE Archie Goodwin!
With the win, Phoenix earned a day off and now begins preparing to play Toronto on Saturday in the Quarterfinals of the Vegas Summer League Tournament.
