The Phoenix Suns are now 3-0 in preseason, beating the Spurs in San Antonio by a score of 106-99. It was a back and forth game, with twelve ties and thirteen lead changes, but the Suns just pulled out a victory. Three straight preseason wins may not be something to go wild over, but it should certainly be a confidence booster for a team with many new faces under a first-year head coach.
On the Suns side, the game saw a major contribution from former Pacer Gerald Green, who led the Suns with 19 points. Green is trying to make his case for the starting small forward spot come the regular season. The decision is still tough, though, as PJ Tucker, also looking to be the starter, put up 14 points on 5-7 shooting. Rookie Dionte Christmas, also fighting to be included in the Suns guard-heavy roster , added 14 points, including shooting 3-4 from three. The players in fierce competition for a roster spot will likely keep getting the majority of time for the next few games. Goran Dragic played only seven minutes against San Antonio, and was the only Suns player that played but didn’t score.
Eric Bledsoe has been on a cold streak the past couple of games. He put up seven points on 3-11 shooting, similar to his stats from the previous game against Portland. In order to be the star he is considered to potentially be, and the one the Suns need him to be, he has got to take smarter shots.
Rookie Alex Len put up six points and grabbed nine rebounds, while Archie Goodwin put up six points and grabbed three rebounds. Both of these rookies has shown the lack of consistency one can expect from first-year players, but both have shown potential.
As a team, the Suns shot 46% from the field and 37% from three. The three-point shooting hasn’t been fantastic in the Suns first three preseason games, and so far that has been their biggest weak point. The Suns will also need to do a better job distributing the ball. Against San Antonio, Marcin Gortat led the team with three assists.
Despite some shortcomings, the Suns have impressed in the preseason so far. The early success should give the team some idea of what to build on and what the team’s identity will be, and being able to figure that out in preseason can help any team once the wins start to count.
