The Suns have added seven new players to the roster this off-season, nine before the Brad Miller decided to retire and they ultimate cut Jerome Dyson. The Suns currently have thirteen players on their roster and they still need to add two more players to fill out the roster to fifteen.

The Suns also still have about 7.5 million dollars in cap room to sign two players. The Suns right now are pretty set at the depth chart, three point guards, five wing players, two centers and three power forwards which means the Suns can either sign another wing player and another big man.

Tough part right now is that the Suns pretty much have their rotation set so it’s tough for them to decide on which players to add, more to it though, players who are okay with being bench warmers while simultaneously making contributions to the team. Usually those players are older veterans who are past their years but teams give these guys contracts not only to fill a roster spot but also to mentor young players.

Possible candidates for this position would be former Heat big man Juwan Howard, Derek Fisher, Maurice Evans, Ben Wallace, Erick Dampier and Mike Bibby. All these guys are veterans who have found success in the league and can certainly have a positive impact on many of the Suns young players.

The Suns can also go in another direction and use that cap space to take a gamble on couple of young guys who have talent but haven’t had much success due to personal issues. A couple of guys off the top of my head would be big man Andray Blatche, former lottery pick swingman Terrence Williams, and also swingman Damion James. It’ll be interesting to see how the Suns wrap up their rest of their off-season. Suns fans expect a few more moves for the Suns before the tip-off on October 31st against the Golden State Warriors.

The Suns acquired Jermaine O’Neal today to fill their back-up center position, the details of the signings haven’t been disclosed but one thing now is probably for sure; Channing Frye is on his way out. When the Suns claimed Luis Scola off the amnesty auction I was under the impression that Channing Frye would be moved to that back-up center/power forward position that he played when he first signed with the Suns back in 2009.

O’Neal struggled with injuries during his two years in Boston playing only 49 games combined in the two seasons. I guess he’s heard of the Phoenix Suns training staff of miracle workers that can possibly allow him to stay in the league for a couple more years.

With O’Neal, Scola, Marcin Gortat and second year player Markieff Morris who showed a lot of promise his rookie season, I think Channing Frye is going to be the odd man out unless he’s been busting his butt this off-season and have improved mightily since last season. Chances? Slim, but crazier things have happened.

One thing I hope is that the Suns don’t make the mistake of giving Morris’ minutes to Frye; Frye is a good player who can contribute to any team with his ability to stretch the floor but Morris ABSOLUTELY NEEDS consistent minutes each night to develop, and if I’m Alvin Gentry I’ll be damned to even give a single minute of playing time that belongs to Morris to Frye.

Could Channing Frye be on the move? He hasn’t exactly been a hot name and he still has two years left on his contract worth around 12 million but I can see the Suns making a one sided trade where they send Frye to a team under the salary cap in exchange for a second rounder.
