When new players joins a team adjustments are expect to be made by everyone, from the coach to the players to the front office. The Suns currently have 14 guys on their roster and will be cut to 13 because Brad Miller is going to retire, but aside from that the Suns have 6 returning players and 7 new ones.

How the team performs this year will heavily depend on how quickly the team can develop chemistry, silver lining; Goran Dragic and Luis Scola played together in Houston, and with a pass first rookie Kendall Marshall running the show as a back-up it should make the adjustments a little easier. However it doesn’t change the fact that Alvin Gentry has one hell of job coming up this season.

Alvin Gentry has been famous for being a player’s coach but he’s got his work cut out for him this season for so many reasons, first being he got 7 new players on his roster, second being he no longer has a Steve Nash & Grant Hill leadership and presence in the locker room, and above all else this is the first time Alvin Gentry won’t have one of the greatest point guards in history running the show for him.

This season though presents brand new challenges, the past couple years the Suns lacked talent and they just simply didn’t have enough fire power on the roster to make the playoffs. This season however, the Suns no longer lack talent; they added Michael Beasley, Kendall Marshall, Luis Scola, Goran Dragic, Wesley Johnson.

Gentry now will have to motivate a bunch of underachieving, unmotivated and unproven young guys in Beasley, and Johnson to rise to occasion and be the players they COULD be. Under the guidance of Gentry, the brilliant Phoenix training staff, and in an offensive system that’s so wide open and fast paced if they can’t succeed here they won’t be able to succeed anywhere.

Finally Alvin will be tasked with managing and massaging minutes throughout the season as the Suns have a bit of a log jam on the wing spot, point guard spot, and even the forward spot. It’ll be interesting to see what goes down as the season progress but if anyone is up for the task its good ole Alvin Gentry. This season it’ll be relied upon Alvin Gentry to get this team to mold together and be competitive, so question is; What now Alvin?

You know as a sports fan and most importantly a Suns fan. There are days where I spent a couple of hours on Youtube looking at Suns player highlights from the past and today I came across Michael Redd’s 25 point explosion against the Rockets and his 23 point burst against the Lakers.

Now that I think about it, I ask myself why in the world did the Suns sign Shannon Brown over Michael Redd. Michael Redd was a beast towards the end of the season and he showed that he still has the ability to score off isolations. Not to mention Redd’s leadership in the locker would certainly have an influence on the younger players and a scorer like Beasley who’s a lefty just like Redd could’ve certainly learned a lot from Redd who was one of the top scorers in the league.

There was a stretch during the beginning of April when the Suns went 5-1 and got back into the playoff races and coincidentally Redd during that stretch averaged 15.5 point per game in only about 19 minutes a night.

Michael Redd in my opinion certainly would’ve been a better fit for the Suns than Shannon Brown. Since the Suns no longer have Steve Nash and Grant Hill being the verteran leaders of that team; Redd seemed like the perfect man for the job. Redd isn’t going to be the Michael Redd of old but he’s still capable of averaging 15 points a game due to his shooting touch, basketball IQ, and his experience.

Shannon Brown would probably bring the scoring to the table that Redd would bring but probably not all the other intangibles that Redd has. On top of it all I think Redd would have a much cheaper price tag than Brown. Sure Redd came off two knee surgeries but the Suns training staff managed to keep him healthy during the past chaotic season with back to back to back games, so a normal regular season shouldn’t be too tough of a challenge for those training staff of miracle workers.
