Eric’s Comments:

Scola is the man’s man. He is that hard worker with the crafty post skills and footwork, who plays below the rim, day in and day out. Scola had a good year and apart from Goran Dragic is the player least responsible for the demise of the team this season. He brought the effort and the talent every game.

However, I hope Scola is able to be traded so that he doesn’t continue to be mired in this losing culture during his last years in the league and instead has the opportunity to flourish for a contender. Scola needs to go for the Suns sake as well. They need to see if Markieff Morris can be a starting power forward in this league. I don’t think we can know that until he starts almost a whole year without the steadiness and reliability of Scola for the coach to fall back onto.

Matt’s Comments: 

If one had to describe Luis Scola in one word that word would be professional. Scola was a rock all season long, he did what was asked of him, never complained and showed up to ball night in and night out.

The Suns currently has the Argentinean sensation off of a bargain deal as they’re paying him a little over $4 million per season, and since he was an amnesty claim, he will be eligible to be traded this July.

Lon Babby made a statement upon the conclusion of the 2012-2013 regular season that NEXT SEASON would be the first “Real” Rebuilding year for our Phoenix Suns.

Regardless of whether or not Babby will correct, here are three players the Suns should absolutely consider moving for the sake of the franchise and every citizen of Planet Orange.

1) Marcin Gortat

There are many reasons for the Suns to trade Gortat. The biggest one being that he will be on the final year of his contract heading into next season, and after declining a contract extension from the Suns last October, the Suns should trade him and avoid the risk of losing him for nothing next summer.

Then there’s the age factor. Gortat will be turning 30 next February and given the fact that the Suns are in full on rebuilding mode, there’s really no permanent place for an aging veteran who’s just about set in his ways. Gortat won’t come back next summer and suddenly emerge as the next Hakeem Olajuwon, and moving Gortat will open up more playing time for the younger players on the team.

Gortat may be coming off of injury but he’s still one of the better centers in the league and there’s certainly a market for him. Teams like the Portland Trail Blazers, Dallas Mavericks, or maybe even the Atlanta Hawks would be a good fit for him. Unfortunately for the Suns, Gortat’s current value is relatively low in comparison to his value after last season however the Suns should have no problem finding a first-round pick for the Polish Hammer.

2) Luis Scola 

Scola was one of the Suns best players this past season. His craftiness around the basket is second to none and his toughness rubbed off on a lot of teammates, but Scola could arguably be the most desired player on the Suns roster with exception of Goran Dragic.

The Suns currently have a huge log jam at the four spot. I expect the Morris twins to make big jumps next season and if Scola sticks around there simply won’t be enough playing time for everybody. Scola still has great value on the open market because of what he still do offensively and he’s not shabby defensively neither.

The Suns would be able to trade Scola until later on this summer because Scola was an amnesty claim but should the Suns decide to trade the crafty Argentinian, teams like the Nets, or the Raptors would be interested.

3) Michael Beasley

Every single ounce of faith I had in Michael Beasley has been vaporized by his atrocious and inconsistent play throughout last season. It’s just impossible to figure out how someone could be awful when they’re so talented, it’s beyond mind boggling.

Beasley may a tough sale but one has to think that there’s a team out there who’s desperate enough to take him. Perhaps a team with a naive coach who’s thinking “Hey! Maybe I can channel this guy’s inner Carmelo Anthony.” Beasley still has two years left on his deal(including next season) and he’s set to make roughly six million per year.

Unloading Beasley won’t be an easy task but it’s also not an impossible one. Beasley is still just 24-years old and who’s to say there isn’t a coach out there who can get this guy to live up to his potential.
