When I heard in the Arizona Republic Paul Coro’s latest article that the Milwaukee Bucks’ assistant general manager, Jeff Weltman, was the leading candidate for the GM vacancy in Phoenix, I was a bit skeptical.

I mean . . . the Bucks? They haven’t drafted particularly well recently. Other than the great value of Larry Sanders 15th in the first round of the 2010 draft and Luc Richard Mbah a Moute as the seventh pick the second round in 2008, there hasn’t been any real value taken from the draft.

Also, what impact players have they gotten in trades or free agency? Only Monta Ellis (who is practically the same player as Brandon Jennings, their point guard) in a trade for Andrew Bogut, who when he’s not injured is helping the Golden State Warriors in the first round of the playoffs.

Where are the Bucks? Oh, that’s right just got swept by Miami by double-digits in every game . . . well, actually can’t blame them for that too much. Almost every team could get swept by Miami, especially if your record going into the playoffs was under .500, but you made the postseason anyway, because you played in the horribly top-heavy Eastern Conference.

So, I was critical of a hire by the Suns for a high-ranking position within the organization from the most “blah” team in the league. However, the 48-year-old brings some qualities that Phoenix desperately needs.

In Coro’s article he says, “In Milwaukee, Weltman is in on trades, drafts and free agents and is known for keen talent evaluation.”

That is what the Suns need, especially in these next couple years. Phoenix can’t afford to whiff on the multiple first-round picks they will have in the coming years.

Other candidates that President of Basketball Operations Lon Babby is interviewing are either GMs or assistant GMs from the Pacers, Celtics and Spurs.

The 2012-2013 Phoenix Suns(13-28) allowed the Milwaukee Bucks(20-18) a win in Phoenix for the time since 1987 as the Bucks overcame a eight point deficit in the 4th quarter to secure the win 98-94; can’t say I saw that coming.

The Bucks were led by Larry Sanders who put up 19 points, 15 rebounds and 2 blocks; Monta Ellis added 24 points and 6 assists. However the hero for Milwaukee last night was shooting guard Mike Dunleavy. Dunleavy hit a huge 3-pointer for Milwaukee with 57.6 seconds left in the game to cap off a 10-0 run for Milwaukee and giving the Bucks a 94-86 lead with less than a minute to go.

“You want to take those shots,” Dunleavy said. “You want to take them and make them. At that point I think it was eight points and only less than a minute left. Not enough possessions in the game for them to come back unless we completely fall apart.”

With the win over the Suns, the Bucks now improve to 4-2 under interim coach Jim Boylan who took over the role as head coach after the firing of Scott Skiles.

“I knew about it because we talked about it last year before the game but I was hoping we wouldn’t talk about it this year, which we didn’t,” Sanders said. “I don’t like to bring up the past. It’s too much pressure. But I was happy we came out and broke that streak.”

The Suns were absolutely remarkable early on this season when they made comeback after comeback after trailing during games but it seems nowadays the Suns are on the receiving end of that. Once again the Suns were unable to hold on to a 4th quarter lead. The Suns led Milwaukee 80-72 with 9:52 left in the ballgame however the Suns then allowed the Bucks on a quick 8-0 run as they tied the game at 80-80 on a 3-pointer by Dunleavy.

Jan. 17, 2013; Phoenix, AZ, USA; Milwaukee Bucks forward John Henson (31) backs into defender Phoenix Suns forward Markieff Morris (11) in the second half at US Airways Center. The Bucks defeated the Suns 98-94. Mandatory Credit: Jennifer Stewart-USA TODAY Sports

With the teams exchanging baskets down the stretch, Markieff Morris scored on a lay-up to give Phoenix an 86-84 advantage with 3:50 left in the contest but ultimately it was the Bucks who went on a 10-0 run to close out the game.

“We can’t let them get shots, loose balls, kick out for 3s and all that,” Brown said. “We can’t let this discourage us. We’ve just got to keep playing hard and it’s all going to come together.”

Well at this point perhaps not everyone in the Suns organization is as optimistic as Shannon Brown. During the game it was reported that the Suns were considering the idea of giving the young players more playing time but the organization has yet to come to that decision as a collective group. What that means at this stage of the game is that the Suns are considering the idea of yanking the plug on the season. Stick and stay with Sun-N-Gun for any updates on the situation.

Once again the Suns were awful at taking care of the basketball. The Suns coughed up the ball 18 times which led to 21 points for the Bucks, however in the Suns defense, the Bucks are one of the best in the NBA in forcing turnovers; Ellis recorded three steals for Milwaukee.

Good news is, the Suns won’t play another game until next Wednesday which is nearly a week away. This will give the players, coaches, and front office staff to figure everything out. In regards to the idea of the Suns “Pulling the plug” On the season, without a doubt, its time! It says a lot when a team that hasn’t gotten a win in your building in nearly 26 years comes in and beats ya! A wake up call took place weeks ago, this is just a snooze alarm.
